The design challenge was to develop and produce three color editorial (digital) illustrations within a four-page magazine article. Visual imagery should highlight headlines and relate to the body text content. The illustrations were created in Adobe Illustrator.
Features of the natural environment and wilderness are the focus of my illustrations. The icon of a hiker is repeated in each illustration; this figurative icon is used on all trailhead signage in the Canadian National Parks. A tree line flows from the cover illustration into a darker illustration on page two, establishing a visual flow that emphasizes transition from daytime into night. Graphic features are repeated in each image to create a relationship between the illustrations: gradient sky, textural effects, and topographies of the natural environment. I chose to make a technical drawing of a compass to include on the cover illustration to further emphasize the subject matter of the article.
